Men rescued in impact area (13/11/09)
Friday the 13th may be traditonally viewed as unlucky by some but it turned out well for a missing walker descending off Lugnaquilla in the late afternoon. The male walker who had summited the mountain between 15:30 and 16:00hrs became disorientated in the poor weather conditions and at about 12:15am on the morning of the 14th Mountain Rescue Teams were alerted by the Gardai and asked to assist in a search for the man.
Members of the Glen of Imaal MRT who were already based in the Glenmalure area, quickly established contact with the missing man. He was questioned about his surroundings and based on his specific description of a bridge that he was near Team members were able to establish that he was most probably on the Army lands in the Glen of Imaal.
Whilst Team members began a preliminary search with our Colleagues the Dublin Wicklow MRT, contact was established with the Army Information centre at Seskin school and the soldiers on duty there were able to confirm the location of the bridge. The bridge in question was located in the “impact area” a zone off limits to walkers as it is actively used for defence forces training exercises. The walker was asked to stay put and soldiers were dispatched to retrieve him. He was located at about 2:30am, wet and suffering from hypothermia
